WELCOME
The Preston James Research Fund is dedicated to supporting research into children's life support.
Our vision: to support life saving miracles for children in intensive care.
Our mission: to improve the chance of survival of critically ill children by supporting intensive care treatment, research and practice.
Our logo boy is Preston James. At the age of two and a half, he suffered pneumonia from a simple virus, which caused an acute lung injury. This allowed a secondary bacterium to invade his body causing an overwhelming sepsis. Preston was promptly put on life support but died a few short hours later. Read On... Our ambassador is Grant Hackett. In early childhood, Grant suffered from respiratory illnesses which have continued on into adulthood. Despite this, Grant has gone on to become an Olympic champion and a hero to many kids. How you can help: make a donation today. Help us to support the research that supports children.

OUR AIMS- Provide critical knowledge for specialists treating children undergoing corrective repair of congenital heart disease (CHD)
- Optimise respiratory support for children born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH), contributing to a higher survival rate
- Allow doctors to better manage the respiratory care of children and infants in the wards, minimising the need for further escalated respiratory support and reducing the rate of admissions to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
- Contribute to improved life support techniques directly reducing the mortality of children from severe respiratory disease requiring life support to less than 5%
Australia wide the mortality rate is currently between 20-40% and the Mater PICU staff have substantially reduced this figure by applying methods studied.
